New Garbage and Recycling Ordinance After 18 months of review by citizens' committees, surveys of residents, and public hearings, the City Council has adopted 3 major changes to the way the garbage and recycling is collected for residents living in single-family homes or townhouses with individual collection. 1. Garbage and recycling can now be collected at the curb on collection day. For those residents who wish to keep garage-door collection, please contact your hauler to make these arrangements. 2. Recycling will now be collected every other week, and residents can now also place their recycling in one single-sort container, which will be provided by your hauler. All recyclable materials can be placed in these bins, and the bins come in 30- 60-, and 90-gallon sizes. And the more your recycle, the less you need to throw away! So, contact your hauler to discuss which size recycling bin is right for you. 3. Also, the City has been divided into 5 "hauling zones", and each zone has been assigned a day of the week, Monday through Friday, when garbage and recycling are collected. Everyone within these zones will have their garbage and recycling on the same day, but you can still keep your current hauler. The haulers and the City worked very hard to try to keep collection days the same as currently exist, but it became impossible to create the zones without impacting residents' current collection days. Here is a link to the map that shows the zone boundaries. The ordinance can be viewed on the ordinance page site >>> The ordinance was changed for a number of reasons, including the following:
