ABOUT THE H1N1 INFLUENZA:

The City of Apple Valley would like citizens to be informed and prepared for a possible flu pandemic. Even when there is no influenza pandemic in the United States, governments at all levels are continuously preparing for disasters, including an influenza pandemic. We encourage families and businesses to prepare as well.

Here are some things you should know and precautions you can take:

  • Influenza is a contagious disease of the lungs.
  • Influenza usually spreads by infected people coughing and sneezing.
  • Most people will have little or no immunity to the H1N1 strain of influenza.

FLU PRECAUTIONS AND PREVENTION TIPS:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home and rest if you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with tissue when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Families should construct a family emergency kit for the home with essential supplies such as food, water, medicine and a thermometer.
  • Businesses should consider developing a Business Continuity Plan.

SYMPTOMS OF H1N1 (SWINE) FLU

  • Generally, flu like symptoms have been reported with confirmed cases of swine flu.
  • Fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
  • In some cases, diarrhea and vomiting can occur.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS?

  • Schedule an appointment with a health care provider.
  • Patients with mild acute respiratory illness should be encouraged to stay home until 24-48 hours after resolution of symptoms.
  • Patients should be instructed to wash their hands frequently, cough into a tissue or sleeve (not into bare hands or onto another person), dispose of tissues in the trash, and stay home from school or work until 24-48 hours after illness is resolved.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAVE THE FLU?

  • Patients with confirmed H1N1 novel influenza should be advised to stay home for 7 days if an adult, 10 days if a child or 24 hours after the resolution of symptoms (whichever is longer).
