Backyard sheds can provide much needed storage space, but all accessory structures must meet minimum standards pertaining to size, location, maintenance, etc. Please observe the following guidelines to ensure compliance with your accessory structure.

Permits are required for all accessory structures over 200 square feet in area. All accessory structures over 200 square feet must be built to standards established in the MN State Building Code, and suitably anchored to the ground. Temporary structures such as carports are prohibited.

Accessory structures should be setback 10 feet from rear property lines, 5 feet from any side lot property lines and 20 feet from a side lot line when adjacent to a public right of way. Please contact the City of Apple Valley Planning Department at (952) 953-2575 to discuss the placement of your accessory building.

Location in utility easements of record is prohibited without consent of the city and/or the public utility holding the easement. All accessory structures must be adequately maintained so as not to be an eyesore or a public nuisance.

With questions or concerns regarding compliance of existing accessory structures in your neighborhood please contact Ben Pierson in Code Enforcement by phone at 952.953.2571; or by email at bpierson@ci.apple-valley.mn.us.
