[ARCHIVED] Learn more about Apple Valley’s grass and weed standards!

Blooming Canada Thistle

Undesirable to many, dandelions are not a weed by ordinance and do not constitute a violation unless taller than 8”. City ordinance prohibits state listed noxious weeds, and grass and rank vegetation in excess of 8” (inches) in height.

Noxious weeds in Minnesota have been found to be injurious to public health, the environment, public roads, crops, livestock, or other property. The purpose of the Minnesota Noxious Weed Law is to protect residents of the state from the injurious effects of noxious weeds. There are 48 state listed plants in Minnesota 44 of which are considered noxious weeds. Each plant is categorized as one of the following: Prohibited (Eradicate), Prohibited (Control), Restricted, or Specially Regulated. Plants on the eradicate list must be eradicated by killing the above and belowground parts of the plant. Plants on the control list must be controlled preventing the maturation and spread of propagating parts.   Restricted noxious weeds may not be sold, transported without a permit, or intentionally planted in Minnesota. Specially regulated plants must be eradicated or controlled according to specified regulations. All regulated plants must be eradicated or controlled in accordance with the Minnesota Noxious Weed Law. (Source: MN Department of Agriculture).

In Apple Valley, long grass and vegetation (including dandelions) in excess of 8” (inches) in height in lawn areas, and not specifically part of a garden or natural area, is also considered a violation and must be trimmed upon notice.
