[ARCHIVED] Doing business from home? Follow these guidelines to be within ordinance requirements.

In order to preserve the character of residential neighborhoods home occupations are regulated within residential districts. Daycare and state licensed facilities are permitted uses that are not considered a Home Occupation.

Home occupations should be conducted in a manner consistent with ordinance requirements. Below are some guidelines that may assist: 

  1. Business may only be operated by persons residing in the dwelling. No outside employees permitted. 
  2. Business must be operated within the primary structure, not the garage or a detached building. 
  3. No evidence of the occupation may be visible from the street. 
  4. No signs are permitted to advertise the business. 
  5. No over-the-counter retail sales are permitted. 
  6. Entrance to the home occupation must be gained from within the structure, not from a separate entrance. 
  7. No more than three parking spaces for the occupant and visitors shall be needed. 
  8. Shall not include tourist homes, restaurants or similar uses.

Some permitted home occupations include, but are not limited to, minor repair services (camera repair, computer repair, etc.), professional offices, photo, and art studios. Auto repair of any type whether for profit or not for profit is prohibited. Auto repair may only take place on vehicles owned by residents of a property. Accessory buildings and garages may not be used for home occupations.
