[ARCHIVED] Clearing public sidewalks supports a safe, vibrant, and active community!

Clearing snow and ice from public sidewalks and fire hydrants along your property is essential to the health, safety and welfare of the city, and can promote economic vitality within the city!

City ordinance requires that all public sidewalks are cleared of snow and ice within 48 hours of the most recent snow event. Not only is it required by code, but it is also a smart idea from a liability standpoint, and it can have wide reaching benefits to the community.    

Clearing snow and ice from public sidewalks can serve many purposes for the community that you might not recognize. In addition to preventing unnecessary slips and falls; it can keep school children walking home from the bus stop off of public streets and out of harm’s way. Having sidewalks cleared can promote pedestrian access to nearby commercial amenities supporting local businesses. Sidewalks free of snow and ice can also promote healthy, active, outdoor lifestyles even during the cold winter months. When clearing snow, please remember to clear the sidewalk completely to allow full access from the street by individuals using electric wheel chairs. We also ask owners of commercial properties to keep their private sidewalks clear, as they are used regularly by the general public.

The Fire Department also asks that all fire hydrants be cleared of snow and ice accumulation a minimum of 36” (3 feet) surrounding the hydrant. This will provide quick access by fire fighters in the event of an emergency.
