[ARCHIVED] As spring nears, so do incidents of thefts from vehicles

Warmer weather brings out the good in most, but not all as is evidenced by recent reports of damage to and theft from vehicles.

The Apple Valley Police Department responded to five reports of suspicious behavior, damage to property and theft all related to incidents where vehicles had been tampered with or entered on Monday, April 14. In one report, a resident went outside at 6:00 a.m. to find someone standing by her vehicle. The suspect took off running and Officers were unable to locate him. Other victims reported their vehicles entered and rummaged through. Two victims had items taken from their vehicles including credit cards, gift cards, and backpacks. One victim had her vehicle window broken out and another victim stated there was slight damage to his vehicle that may be consistent with breaking into the driver's side door.

Remember to lock your vehicle whenever you are away from it. Thefts from vehicles can happen any time; overnight, during the day, while you are shopping, etc. Never leave valuables in your vehicle either in plain sight or "hidden". It is important to report all suspicious activity to 911 whenever it is happening. Don't wait to report and then find out that you have become a victim.

The summer months typically bring a rise in criminal activity. Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for you and your neighbors. Together we can make sure Apple Valley remains a safe place to live, work, recreate and raise a family!
